Electrical appliance recycling

Electrical appliances should not be placed in your general waste bin. The reason is that electrical equipment often contains hazardous substances and requires separate collection and recycling.

If you need to dispose of electrical appliances, we advise the following:

  • if your electrical appliance still works and is safe to use, it's better for it to be re-used than sent for disposal; you might be able to sell it, give it away, or pass it on to a charity - see our Re-use page for more details
  • bring your electrical appliance to our Household Waste Recycling & Reuse Centre (HWRRC) for free disposal - see our HWRRC page for more details; we'll arrange for items to be sold on and reused by our charity partners where possible, but if they can’t be re-used, they will be recycled

Small electrical appliances can be taken to one of the recycling points throughout the borough - see Southwark Maps for more information. This includes both council operated sites, and take back facilities provided by electrical retailers who will take back old electrical appliances and recycle them. You should check before taking items if there are any conditions (for example, if you need to be a local resident).
