Apply for energy bill support if you do not get it automatically
Find out about types of energy bill support that you can apply for if you don’t automatically get it, including the Alternative Fuel Payment.
Who might not get the automatic energy bill support
Most households get a £400 discount on their energy bills automatically. In some cases, you do not get the discount automatically, for example, if you:
- pay for energy through a landlord, housing manager or site owner
- live in a park home, houseboat, caravan or off the electricity grid
- are a care home resident or living in care facilities/sheltered accommodation (wholly or partly self-funded)
How to apply for energy bill support if you don’t get it automatically
This support is provided by the government and is delivered by local authorities. You must apply directly to the government for energy bill support if you don’t get it automatically, not us. You should apply before 31 May 2023.
If you already applied for the discount, you do not need to contact us. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) will let you know the outcome of your application and we will make the payment if your application is successful.
How to apply to the Alternative Fuel Payment Alternative Fund (AFP AF)
The domestic Alternative Fuel Payment (AFP) provides a £200 grant payment to UK households that use alternative fuels for heating instead of mains gas.
You may be eligible if both the following are true:
- your household is not connected to the mains gas grid
- you use alternative fuels as your main form of heating
This is on top of the £400 from your electricity supplier.
Apply for an alternative fuel payment of £200.
