Southwark Council commissioned care homes
We hold contracts with 2 care providers, Country Court and Agincare. They deliver residential and nursing care support across 6 care homes in Southwark.
Care homes across the UK are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). They receive a rating based on the CQC's inspections. Our commissioning department also makes regular checks of these 6 care homes.
We have commissioned 4 residential care homes and 2 nursing homes.
Residential care homes
Residential care homes are for adults who do not need 24-hour nursing care but are unable to live independently in their own home.
They offer long-term or short-term residential care. This can also include:
- emergency care
- respite care
- palliative care
Residential care is offered to older people and those aged 18 to 65 with:
- physical disabilities
- learning disabilities
- mental health issues
- alcohol or drug dependence
- other care needs
The size of residential care homes can vary. Smaller homes may house only 1 resident. Larger homes can have as many as 250 residents.
Depending on the needs of the resident, staff at care homes can also help with daily activities like personal care, dressing and eating. They are not considered to be medical facilities.

Nursing homes
Nursing homes are also called residential nursing homes or care homes with nursing. They have qualified nurses to provide nursing care as well as residential care.
Their purpose is to provide care and support for people with specific conditions or disabilities who struggle significantly with daily life and need the added support.
There is always at least one qualified and registered nurse on site. This means residents have access to 24-hour medical care and skilled nursing support.
Staff are trained to care for people with a specific medical condition. They specialise in caring for people with a whole range of health conditions and disabilities such as dementia, severe learning disabilities and substance abuse.
Nursing homes are for people who cannot be cared for sufficiently at home because they need regular medical attention but do not need to go into hospital.
