Maria
My career journey
"I’ve worked for Southwark Council since 1989, starting as a home helper supporting clients in their homes – cleaning, shopping, preparing meals, and offering companionship to those who might not see anyone else all week. Over time, I moved into more complex care roles, becoming a home carer, then an early intervention worker, and eventually qualifying as a social worker in 2005.
Today, I work with adults 18 and over, supporting people with physical disabilities, mental health needs, and complex situations. No two days are ever the same. I carry out assessments, support safeguarding cases, arrange care packages, liaise with professionals, and even prepare court documents to help protect vulnerable adults. I’ve also trained as a best interests assessor to help ensure people’s rights are upheld when they’re no longer able to make certain decisions for themselves."
What Southwark has done for me
"Southwark has supported me at every step, funding my training, encouraging my development, and giving me the confidence to take on new challenges. One case that’s stayed with me is helping a young man with a disability secure an accessible home so he could leave a care home and reunite with his family. He called me his “Saint Maria” – a moment I’ll always treasure.
Working here has allowed me to grow, make a real difference, and feel valued. If you’re passionate about supporting people and want opportunities to learn, Southwark is the place to be."
