Beginner’s guide to voting

What happens at the polling station?

Receive your poll card

A few weeks before election day, you’ll get a poll card through the post. It tells you where and when to vote.

(You don't need to bring the card with you – but do check you know where to go!)

Bring photo ID

You must bring a accepted form of photo ID to vote (like a passport, driving licence or a free Voter Authority Certificate)

Go to your polling station

Your poll card will tell you which polling station to go to. You can also find your polling station using the online polling station finder.

Check in with the staff

When you arrive, give your name and address to the polling station staff. Then show your photo ID. They’ll check you’re on their polling station register.

Get your ballot paper

They’ll hand you a ballot paper listing the candidates or options you can vote for. We have provided an example of a ballot paper for your convenience.

Fill in your ballot paper

  • Go into a one of the polling booths to vote in secret
  • Read the instructions carefully
  • Use the pencil provided (or bring your own pen) to put an ‘X’ next to your choice
  • Don't sign your name or make extra marks.

Put your ballot paper in the box

Once you've voted, fold your ballot paper in half and post it into the collect ballot box.

That’s it – you’ve voted!

You’re done. Your voice will be counted.

Please speak to one of the polling station staff if you have any questions or need help.
