Land in Southwark

Find out how the Southwark Land Commission is working to free up more land for the public.

We want to free up land in Southwark for people to benefit from it. This is because not enough of our land is used to benefit the local community. This creates:

  • a lack of affordable homes, which can lead to gentrification that squeezes out residents
  • poor access to good quality workspace and community spaces
  • social inequality
  • a loss of green space and biodiversity and an increase in pollution that threatens residents’ health

The Southwark Land Commission

We set up the Southwark Land Commission to tackle these problems and find ways to free up more land for the public.

The group:

  • provides evidence
  • gets evidence
  • makes clear recommendations for how land should be valued and used in Southwark

It is independent of the council and the first group of its kind in London. Members include experts, community representatives and major landowners.

Report recommendations

The report’s recommendations are:

  1. Put social purpose at the heart of land use.
  2. Map what’s there and what is not.
  3. Take control of our land and assets.
  4. Defend and extend affordable accommodation for all.
  5. Cherish our natural capital and decarbonise our land.
  6. Give the community real power and voice.
  7. Disrupt the status quo to unlock bigger changes.

The Southwark Land Commission was set up as part of our Council Delivery Plan, ‘Fairer, Greener, Safer.’
