Household Waste Reuse and Recycling Centre

Residents can bring unwanted household and garden items to the household waste reuse and recycling centre (HWRRC) free of charge. We'll help you to separate them into the different containers for reuse or recycling.

On average, about 50 percent of the materials at the HWRRC are reused or recycled. Only items that cannot be reused or recycled are sent for energy recovery or landfilled.

The following materials can be brought to the HWRRC for recycling or reuse:

  • Aerosols
  • Batteries
  • Building rubble and hardcore
  • Cans and tins
  • Card and cardboard
  • Cartons: paper-based liquid food and drink cartons, eg Tetra Pak
  • CDs, Re-use and recycling centreDVDs, cassettes and videos
  • Clothes and shoes
  • Electrical appliances (large and small)
  • Electronic equipment
  • Energy-saving lightbulbs
  • Oil - engine and cooking
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Furniture
  • Garden waste
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Ink and toner cartridges
  • Metal
  • Paper, newspapers, magazines, catalogues and directories, including the Yellow Pages

We also accept household waste at the site, which is sent for energy recovery or landfilled.

Residents using a van to transport household materials to the site must bring identification, preferably a council tax bill, and fill in a form.

Organic peat-free soil conditioner

The garden waste generated by Southwark is composted and can be bought as organic peat-free soil conditioner from the HWRRC. The soil conditioner comes in 50 litre bags and costs £4.50 each or three bags for £12.

Trade waste

No trade waste is accepted at the household waste reuse and recycling centre.

There is a separate entrance for traders on Occupation Road. Opening hours for trade recycling and general waste are Monday to Saturday, 8am to 5pm.

Traders wishing to use the site must report to the weighbridge entrance on Occupation Road, where they will incur a charge depending on the weight of the load. Traders who do not comply may be prosecuted.

Traders will need to be Licensed Waste Carriers or prove exemption from the regulations, details can be found on the Environment Agency website.
