Guide to Adoption and Fostering

adopted child and parentWe can help if you are

  • Requesting information and advice on how to adopt or become a foster carer
  • A child or young person who is unable to live within your own family network, either temporarily or permanently
  • A parent or parent-to-be seeking advice, information and help relating to the adoption of your own children
  • Seeking information and counselling relating to your own adoption
  • A child care district office or hospital team requiring a fostering and adoption placement

What we do

  • We are always busy recruiting, preparing and assessing foster carers and adopters to accommodate the special needs of children who are looked after by Southwark social services
  • We constantly monitor and support foster carers and adopters and identify and meet their training and development needs
  • We play an important role in counselling individuals who are considering adoption for their unborn child and we offer counselling for people who have been adopted and are seeking their birth and adoption records
  • A major task is finding the right family for individual children who require permanent placements through adoption or long term fostering

Who can adopt or become a foster carer?

Lots of people. We look at each applicant to see what they can offer our children. You may be

  • A full time worker or unemployed
  • Single or married
  • Gay or straight
  • Childless or you may have children of your own
  • In your 40s or 50s
