Southwark 2016
Our shared vision for the future
Southwark 2016 is an ambitious 10-year plan, which sets out what people want their borough to be like over the next decade, and what needs to be done to get there.
It is an important document that guides the work of all statutory agencies in the borough, as well as partners in the voluntary, faith and business sectors. It takes account of trends emerging in the borough and in London more generally, and followed an extensive consultation process that involved local service providers and the wider community.
Southwark is a dynamic and diverse borough with a growing population. In 2001, there were 244,900 residents in Southwark, 25,000 more than in 1991. This growth is set to continue over the next ten years.
The population in 2016 has been estimated at between 267,200 and 302,300. Even at the lower estimate, this presents considerable challenges, but also exciting opportunities.
Decisions made now on how to meet these challenges and use these opportunities will determine the future of the borough and what kind of community Southwark will become.
