Planning Policy

The Bankside development (once completed) on Southwark Street provides an example of a Section 20 application.

The planning policy team produce planning policies and guidance for Southwark Council. These are used to make decisions on planning applications. These decisions should be made in line with the Development Plan, which consists of:

Southwark Plan

The Southwark Plan (or Unitary Development Plan) sets out the framework for future development and land use in Southwark. The policies in the Southwark Plan are used by development control to make decisions on individual planning applications in Southwark. The Southwark Plan was adopted in July 2007 and, along with the London Plan, it makes up the current Development Plan for Southwark.

Local Development Framework

In 2004 the government introduced Local Development Frameworks as a replacement for Unitary Development Plans. Eventually the Southwark Plan will be replaced by the Local Development Framework The Local Development Framework is made up of a number of different documents. We have started to prepare several documents in our Local Development Framework. No Development Plan Documents have so far been adopted by the council.

Supplementary planning documents (SPD) and supplementary planning guidance (SPG)

SPDs and SPGs provide further information and guidance on policies in the development plan.

Public consultation on planning policy documents

The planning policy team usually carry out 12 weeks of consultation on each document; six weeks of informal consultation where the document is availablle to view but we don't accept comments and six weeks of formal consultation when we accept comments on the document.
