STEP IntroductionSTEP logo. Southwark Theatres' Education Partnership

STEP (Southwark Theatres Education Partnership) is a borough-wide partnership linking the theatre community and education sector in Southwark. STEP aims to extend and deepen the theatre and drama experience of all young people living in the borough through the development of partnerships between schools, youth groups and theatres and performing arts organisations.

Southwark Council is one of STEP strategic partners.

The STEP Festival is the focal point of each year's work, a celebration of theatre for young people in Southwark, which brings together organisations, large and small, to 'make the invisible visible' and promote the vast range of imaginative and creative education work that the theatres and performing arts organisations deliver throughout the borough. The exciting two week programme provides young people in Southwark with the chance to participate in theatre and drama in all its forms. The STEP 2008 Festival, STEP Forward will take place from November 10 to 21 2008.

The benefit of involvement in the STEP Festival for the Southwark education sector is found in the diversity of projects STEP offers from one-off workshops and specialised INSET training to performance in and out of school. STEP also offers longer-term bespoke and sustained projects for educators who want to develop specific skills and embed creativity and performance arts into their curriculum.

One of STEP's most recent developments in 2007 to 2008 was the STEP Early Years Programme which involved collaboration between partner theatres in the development of a comprehensive programme of training and workshops in early years' centres across the borough. The aim of the project was to develop models of good practice for early years' settings, empowering early years' practitioners to lead on creative strategies in their own settings.

STEP is a development agency which

  • Promotes the work of Southwark performing arts organisations to the education/community sector
  • Develops partnerships between theatre and performing arts organisations to maximise resources and build on the skills base within the borough
  • Engages in audience development
  • Develops educational partnerships between performing arts organisations and formal and informal provision
  • Works with Southwark Education and schools to embed performance arts in the curriculum
  • Works with Southwark Council to strengthen links between young people and their families and experience of the arts
  • Works with partners to be at the forefront of innovation in the development of performing and live arts for children and young people
