Abolition of slave trade

How was Southwark connected to the transatlantic slave trade?

To commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in 2007 the Cuming Museum and the Southwark Local History Library have produced a timeline and walk to help you explore the borough's history.

The Bankside and Bermondsey walk features places with connections to the transatlantic slave trade and the early presence of Africans in Southwark.

The timeline highlights some of Southwark's significant connections with the slave trade and its abolition in 1807.

Download the walking map and take yourself on a tour of these historic sights.

These resources were produced in collaboration with the Museum in Docklands and Renaissance London. View the Museum in Docklands online map to find out more about London's links to the transatlantic slave trade.
