New Southwark educational maintenance supplement (EMS)

Southwark Council believes strongly in helping young people to fulfil their potential but recognises that you may have concerns about your personal finances if you stay on at school, go to college or a training provider.

As Educational Maintenance Allowances (EMA) are being phased out, by the Government, Southwark Council is introducing a new scheme for 2011/12 - the Southwark Educational Maintenance Supplement (SEMS) - which will provide some financial support for some Southwark 16 to 18 year olds who stay on in education or training.

The criteria you have to meet are that:

  • You are 16-18 years old
  • Resident in Southwark
  • Eligible for free school meals
  • Not receiving the £1,200 entitlement under the national 16 to 18 bursary scheme
  • Not receiving EMA

If you meet all the above points then contact your school, college or training provider about possible funding from Southwark Council.
