Elephant and Castle

Improving transport

How transport will change

Together with Greater London Authority (GLA) and Transport for London, we're working on wider improvements to transport at Elephant and Castle. We're focusing on:

  • major capacity improvements to the Northern Line ticket hall at Elephant and Castle underground station
  • additional cycling and walking facilities throughout the area
  • increased bus priority measures and interchange facilities
  • further road and public realm improvements to the northern roundabout

The London Cycle Hire scheme has also been introduced at the southern junction.

Southern roundabout

Transport changes
Southern roundabout

In partnership with Transport for London (TFL), we've agreed that a T-junction will replace the southern roundabout at the junction of Walworth Road and Newington Butts. The £2.8m scheme commenced in 2010 and was completed in April 2011.

The 3 pedestrian subways around the southern roundabout were also filled in and the new signalled crossings have provided significant improvements both for pedestrians, who can now cross the roads at surface level, and for cyclists who now benefit from new cycle lanes and advanced stop lanes at junctions.

Northern roundabout

In the summer of 2013, the Mayor launched the Roads Task Force vision from the northern roundabout - highlighting how important it is to change the road layout and improve the area.

Northern roundabout - before and after

The project to improve Elephant and Castle will be delivered by Transport for London (TFL) using the principles set out in the Road Task Force. The programme aims to:

  • enable people and vehicles to move more efficiently on London's streets and roads
  • transform the environment for cycling, walking and public transport
  • improve the public realm, provide better and safer places for all activities that take place on the city's streets and provide an enhanced quality of life

For more information on the plans for the northern roundabout, visit the TFL website.
