St Mary’s Churchyard Park
Families celebrated the official opening of the revitalised St Mary’s Churchyard Park at Elephant and Castle this summer. Deputy
Mayor of Southwark, Cllr Jamille Mohammed, led the countdown to the ‘big switch on’ of 2 stunning new water features at the park. Over £1m has been spent on a complete makeover of the park, which sits next to the council’s brand new Castle Leisure Centre. The project, completed in spring, introduced a paved plaza with interactive water jets and an ornamental pond, fringed with wildlife planting and features a central water fountain.
We have also received confirmation that St Mary’s Churchyard Park has won a prestigious award for Landscaping Construction. Since the churchyard re- opened in July it has become a much loved open space at the heart of Elephant and Castle. Now the beautiful landscaping has been recognised by the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI). An Awards Ceremony will be held in December 2017.
Southwark Council opened a brand new park on Salter Road in Rotherhithe. On 11 August, Mayflower Park opened its gates to local people and visitors to the peninsular.
Mayflower Park brings the council’s total number of parks and open spaces to 131 and adds to the broader redevelopment of Surrey Docks.
Fairview Estates helped bring this new public park about, as part of their planning conditions. Mayflower Park is in its infancy, with newly planted trees and associated landscaping.
Cllr Barrie Hargrove, Southwark Council cabinet member for communities, leisure and safety, said: “We are delighted to bring a new green space to Rotherhithe and I hope it will fast become well used and valued by the local community.”
The eagerly anticipated renovation of Pullens Gardens in Walworth will complete in November. The park has been given a much needed makeover with a new playground, community plant beds, picnic and seating areas.
