Local parking amendments

Local parking amendment process

If you have a parking problem, contact us and provide the following information in detail:

  • the problem you're having
  • the days and times the problem occurs
  • what you think is the cause of the problem
  • what you think would be the best solution
  • photos or other details that might assist us

Once we receive your request, we carry out the following steps:

1. Assessment

An engineer will do an initial assessment of your request to see if the change is in line with the local parking amendment (LPA) project.

If not, we'll explain why, and your request may be considered for future parking projects.

If the proposals are in line with our policies, we'll continue the process as follows.

2. Local consultation

On some occasions, we have to carry out informal consultation (including an information pack, proposal drawing and questionnaire) with affected properties.

3. Community council approval

Reports are sent to the community council to seek their approval to progress to statutory consultation. View our project timetable for this year's LPA.

You find out more by read the community council reports and decisions.

4. Traffic management orders

Once the community council has given approval, we'll propose a traffic management order (TMO). A TMO gives the council the power to make and enforce changed parking arrangements.

As part of the TMO process, we carry out a three week consultation in accordance with National legislation (by way of street and press notices).

Consultation allows anyone to make a comment or object to the proposed TMO.

If we receive an objection (which we cannot informally resolve), we'll send another report back to the community council to find out how to proceed. This additional report may delay the LPA by approximately two months and result in the scheme being dropped.

You can find out more details on our legal traffic orders process page.

5. Implementation of the LPA

After the TMO has been made, we'll place an order for the road markings and signs to be installed (which can take 4 to 6 weeks).
