Canada Water regeneration continues with opening of new plaza

Published Thursday, 05 July 2012

Canada Water Plaza opening

Last week saw the opening of the new Canada Water Plaza, the latest milestone in the regeneration of Canada Water, which follows the opening of the £14m library in November 2011.

Developed in partnership between Southwark Council and British Land Canada Quays, the new plaza will be known as Deal Porter Plaza in memory of the thousands of workers in the area employed as porters to carry the deal wood arriving in the old Surrey Quays docks from Canada.

The opening celebratory event was held to thank the local community for their support during the construction process and included performances from a live band and the 'Tumble Circus Aerial Acrobats, well enjoyed by the many local residents and school children who came along to celebrate.

Cllr Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said: "Southwark Council is committed to the regeneration of Canada Water with our partners British Land Canada Quays and have ambitious plans for the area to create a major town centre on the riverside, delivering new affordable housing, shopping and leisure facilities for the local community. The opening of the stunning Canada Water plaza marks another milestone in the journey and will provide a fantastic, new, much needed outdoor space for an exciting programme of events for the local community."

Located in the heart of Canada Water, the new plaza is designed to accommodate outdoor events, markets and entertainment for the local community, complimenting the successful programme of literature events already held at the award-winning Canada Water Library.
