Best in London award for crucial census preparation
Published 19 August 2010
Southwark Council has been recognised as the first and only authority in the capital to have a gold quality list of all the addresses – residential and commercial – in the borough for the 2011 census.
An accurate and complete count of Southwark's population is vital to obtaining full government funding for Southwark residents for the next ten years.
This list will help ensure that the Office for National Statistics, which with the support of the council carries out the census, has the best possible info at its disposal and is able to identify and engage households as part of the count.
The list, known as the Local Land and Property Gazetteer, was awarded a gold standard by the Local Government Information House, the organisation responsible for the National Land and Property Gazetteer, together with Intelligent Addressing as the national custodian.
The gold rating means the list gets top marks for accuracy and being comprehensive.
The list is managed by a small team who receive numerous updates from departments across the council and their list is used not only by a range of council services, but it is also part of a national dataset that the emergency services rely on to respond to 999 calls.
