Southwark youngsters give sport a go

Over a hundred young people have had the chance to try out new sports in Burgess Park as part of a London wide campaign called 'Give it a Go 2012'.
Southwark based teams Tigers Rugby Club, Southwark City Tennis Club and Greenhouse Bethwin Football Club gave youngsters the opportunity to have a go at rugby, tennis and football on 15 and 16 February.
Vernon Neve-Dunn from Southwark Tigers Rugby Club said "For some youngsters it was the first time they had tried a sport outside of school and for others it was a chance to try a different sport. The fact that the sessions were lead by local clubs made it all the more worthwhile, we hope many of them will now join the clubs".
Karima El Hajoui, Deputy Programme Manager at Greenhouse Bethwin FC, said: "It’s fantastic that all three clubs who use Burgess Park were able to come together and organise this event.
"Many of our young players had a go at playing rugby and tennis for the first time and really enjoyed it, plus many of the other club players stayed and showed us their best football skills in the afternoon.
"I hope this event will be the start of a long-term partnership with our neighbouring sports clubs that will benefit everyone living around Burgess Park."
Cllr Veronica Ward, Cabinet member for culture, leisure, sport and the Olympics, said: "Sport in Southwark is going from strength to strength. The council is fully committed to giving youngsters the opportunity to try out new activities. We're immensly proud of our local teams in the borough and thank those who came along for giving up their free time to encourage participation and activity."
