One hundred new high spec homes for former Heygate residents
Published 1 February 2012
Southwark Council’s work to regenerate the borough has taken a big step forward with nearly 100 new high specification homes completed this month, the authority announced this week.
The properties meet the latest modern building requirements and will help address the shortage of housing in the borough as part of the council's Heygate rehousing programme.
Delivered by London and Quadrant Housing Association, in partnership with the council, a number of the flats will be offered to former Heygate residents who have priority over the affordable units and can also view the new homes ahead of other eligible people.
The programme consists of ten housing schemes in total. Six have now completed including Brandon Street, Library Street and Townsend Street this month - adding up to almost 100 new homes this year already.
Three more sites are currently under construction and a further one will be submitted for planning in June 2012 and completed by late 2014.
Councillor Fiona Colley, cabinet member for regeneration at Southwark Council, said: "This is a great start to the year and I'm delighted that three new schemes have seen completion this month, a sign of more to come.
"These homes will be bright and warm, with plenty of modern specifications, perfect for local families, and will go some way to addressing the chronic need for more good quality housing in this central London borough."
To date, through the Heygate rehousing programme, the council and its affordable housing development partners have either built or are building a total of 464 new homes of which 428 are affordable (92%).
The proposed redevelopment of Stead Street car park, the final phase of this programme, is likely to provide a further 136 new homes of which 65% will be new social housing. This would mean that 85% of the Heygate rehousing programme will be affordable housing.
Also scheduled to be completed this year are larger schemes on Harper Road, Royal Road and Camberwell New Road. Across the whole programme there will be an anticipated 600 new homes delivered of which 512 will be affordable. In total 70% of the programme will be social rented units, 15% intermediate, and 15% private.
