Southwark Council Leader aiming to raise thousands for hospital charity

Councillor Peter John

The leader of Southwark Council will be pounding the capital's streets to raise thousands of pounds for charity at the London Marathon, it was announced this week.

Councillor Peter John - believed to be the only council leader in the country entering the marathon this year - is training for the 26.2mile run by doing several running sessions a week.

He hopes to raise £5,000 for one of the Mayor of Southwark's chosen charities, the King's College Hospital rheumatology department.

Councillor John, 45, who last ran a marathon in 2002, said: "I haven't run a marathon for a number of years so getting over the finishing line is going to be no mean feat, but I'm determined to do my bit to raise as much money as possible for King's College Hospital who do absolutely brilliant work.

"I'm aiming to complete the course in under three and a half hours and no doubt I'll be spurred on by the crowds and thousands of well-wishers lining the capital's streets."

The Worshipful Mayor of Southwark, Lorraine Lauder MBE, said: "I'm absolutely delighted that Peter has decided to run this year's London Marathon and raise funds for the King's College Hospital Charity.

"On behalf of Southwark I would like to wish him good luck in his preparations for the race and encourage everyone to help him raise as much money as possible."
