Olympic tickets awarded to athletes who compete in next year’s Mini London Marathon
Published 22 December 2011
Southwark Council is urging young athletes to get in training now, as the top 48 runners in the borough will next year have the added prize of an Olympic ticket.
Every young person who represents Southwark in London's Mini London Marathon, the shorter version of the world famous run that takes place each April, will earn the prize.
The tickets are thanks to the London Marathon, and have been purchased from the UK Athletics ticket allocation, which has made them available in order to support grass roots athletics.
Every year in February Southwark Community Sports team hosts trials in Peckham Rye Park to see which young athletes will make it to compete in the Mini London Marathon two months later.
This year the winning 48 will not only qualify for the race, but when they compete for Southwark in the Mini London Marathon on 22 April they will also receive a ticket to see athletics in the main Olympic stadium in August.
Cllr Veronica Ward, cabinet member for culture, leisure, sport and the Olympics, said:
"What better incentive than an Olympic ticket? It's brilliant that young people are being given this chance, and I urge them to get training as soon as possible. I'd also like to thank the London Marathon for their generosity in donating these tickets."
