Council says thank you after consultation on the cemeteries service

Southwark’s environment boss today thanked all those who took part in the consultation on the future of the cemeteries service.
Results from the three month consultation are currently being analysed and will help shape the council's next steps. It's expected that the council will make their recommendations at cabinet in the New Year.
The consultation, on how the council can best provide a long term burial service, involved residents, cemetery users, community and faith groups, businesses, friends of parks, Southwark and Lewisham residents, sports groups and others.
As well as public meetings and open days a questionnaire was sent to nearly 5,000 people.
In April the council took the decision to create additional burial space across its cemeteries to provide for another eight years of use. So far, the council has created over 300 double depth burial plots, in both Camberwell Old and Camberwell New Cemeteries . New schemes to create more burial space in our cemeteries are underway and will be delivered in coming months.
Cllr Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling at Southwark Council, said:
"It's absolutely vital that for a service like this one we involve the public as much as possible. I want their voice heard, and I want their wishes to form part of the decision the cabinet and I make next year. I would like to thank them for taking part in the consultation and contributing useful ideas on how we can improve the service."
