Southwark Council fully prepared for severe weather

The council’s highways and environment teams are reassuring residents that they are as prepared as possible for any severe weather this winter.

The council's salt depot is currently at full capacity, with over 1,000 tonnes currently there and another 300 tonnes on order.

On top of the grit in place, the highways team has three highway gritters available for use at all times.

These gritters have GPS fitted technology which enables the council to track their routes, map what roads they have covered and keep tabs on how much grit is left in each lorry.

As well as the highway gritters, the council also has a 80 strong fleet of hand gritting machines to ensure footpaths and pavements are kept as clear as possible.

Bags of grit have also been distributed across our estates where they will be used to grit exposed stairways, slopes, ramps and outside sheltered housing.

Southwark Council has also invested in 30 new grit bins, which now total 184 across the borough, to allow residents to help clear pathways and pavements.

Cllr Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling at Southwark Council, said:

"Hopefully we will not experience the severe weather of last year, but nevertheless it's important that we are as prepared as we possibly can be. I'm satisfied that we have sufficient levels of grit already in place, as well as staff and equipment, to cope as best as can be expected."
