Leader of Southwark Council pledges his support for safer cycling
Published 15 December 2011
Cllr Peter John, the leader of Southwark Council, today added his voice to the call for greater safety for cyclists on London’s roads.
It follows a vigil that was held last night for a cyclist who died on Tower Bridge Road following a collision on 2 December.
Cllr John has vowed to write to Peter Hendy, Transport Commissioner at TfL, urging them to conduct a review of dangerous junctions on their road network.
He also pledged to work together with TfL to make the road network in Southwark safer for cyclists.
Southwark Council is currently putting together a cyclists' map of all roads in the borough which highlights the level of cycling proficiency needed to cycle.
It also offers free cycle training to anyone living, working or studying in the borough.
Cllr Peter John, leader of Southwark Council, said:
"We must do all we can to make the capital's roads safer for cyclists. This was yet another tragic collision between a lorry and a cyclist on London 's roads, and it's important that the authorities work together to do all in their power to prevent incidents like these from happening again.
I shall be writing to TfL urging them to review any junctions in Southwark that are considered dangerous but also offering our help in whatever way we can."
