New helpline launched to reduce menace of hate crime

Jointly funded by Southwark Council and the Met Police, the "Stop Hate Line" will provide 24-hour reporting facilities for victims and witnesses of hate crime.

The helpline is targeted at those who have been affected by the continuing menace of hate crime - abuse directed towards people because of their disability race, religion or belief, sexual orientation or transgender identity.

The service is completely confidential and people have the option to remain anonymous.

It is run by Stop Hate UK, an independent charity providing emotional and practical support for anyone who has experienced hate crime. Stop Hate UK can also speak to victims in their preferred language if required

The service will go live on Thursday 1 December.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for community safety at Southwark Council, said:

"This helpline will give the public extra reassurance that help is out there to deal with this crime. It is important that we encourage people to report this crime so that it can be addressed, but it is equally important that people feel supported when they do so. It takes courage to stand up and report this sort of thing, or ask for help, and I'm certain this helpline will make that challenge much easier."

Victims and witnesses can contact the Stop Hate Line by phone, text, post or online to report hate crimes, access support and information.
