Greenland Pier renovation works rescheduled to minimise disruption
Published 29 November 2011
Southwark Council today announced that it is to reschedule its principal inspection of Greenland Pier to the New Year. This will involve the removal of the pier.
The previous timetable for works was for November of this year, but following a request from Thames Clippers about expected passenger numbers, the inspection and the removal of the pier has been moved to February 2012.
Cllr Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling at Southwark Council, said:
"The future of the pier is important and we need to make sure that it's one hundred per cent safe for passengers. We won't know the condition of the pier until we remove it, but at least we can minimise disruption by carrying out this piece of work at a time of year that affects the least number of passengers."
Further announcements about the pier's future will be made in due course.
Background Information
Southwark Council owns the pier.
The pier is a stop on the Thames commuter catamaran service run by Thames Clippers between Embankment and Woolwich Arsenal Pier.
Specialist engineers will have to remove the structure from the water and place it in a dry dock while the inspection is carried out.
