Art for Lakanal fire anniversary
Published 2 July 2010
Ahead of the one year anniversary of the Lakanal fire we have worked with residents and the South London Gallery to produce a huge commemorative art piece to hang on the fencing of Lakanal.
Residents represented their hopes and dreams for the future of the estate on a 140 square metre art installation, to wrap around the ground level of the building. The site remains empty while the investigation into the incident continues
During Easter holiday workshops children on the estate designed their ideas for how the installation should look. Acclaimed artist Orly Orbach transformed their ideas into the finished artwork, which was has now been formally unveiled.
Children living on the estate are also involved in the Saturday club, where artists undertake six month residencies and work alongside children and their parents.
Aside from this project the South London Gallery have commissioned five new works throughout the borough to celebrate its new building, including one huge piece of art on the Marie Curie block. Based next to the Sceaux Garden Estate, the new studio means the gallery can build on its education and outreach work with local schools and community groups, and get even more residents involved in creative projects.
A memorial service was held on 3 July at St Giles Church, Peckham Road to mark the one year anniversary of the fire.
