Public art in Camberwell
Published 30 June 2010
South London Gallery, in Camberwell, has marked the opening of its new buildings with the commissioning of five public art works in the borough.
They include one giant work on the Marie Curie block of Sceaux Gardens estate (pictured right).
Designed by Turner Prize nominated Anglo-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare MBE, the 40 metre high work is based on Indonesian wax batik designs, which were mass produced by the Dutch and sold to the colonies in West Africa.
The work was commissioned by the gallery and part funded by Southwark Council's Cleaner Greener Safer fund.
Cllr Ian Wingfield, Southwark Council Deputy Leader and cabinet member for Housing said: "This incredible work of art and the ongoing success of the South London Gallery are yet more proof that Camberwell is London's best kept cultural secret. On behalf of the council I would like to thank everyone involved."
