Fireworks at Southwark Park, 5 November 2011

Thousands of people descended on Southwark Park to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night on Saturday.

Organised by Southwark Council, crowds tuned out in force for the free annual spectacular.

Police and council chiefs estimated that around 10,000 people attended the celebrations.

As well as the much-loved rockets, roman candles and sparklers the council also provided food and novelty stalls and a mulled wine and spiced cider bar.

And despite a dismal forecast the weather managed to stay dry for the display.

Mayor of Southwark Councillor Lorraine Lauder MBE and who attended the display said: "The fireworks displays were brilliant and I was very happy to see so many people attend the event. I would like to congratulate all those members of staff who worked hard to ensure that everyone had such an enjoyable night of entertainment."

Southwark Park first opened its gates to the public in 1869. In 2001, the park under went a major refurbishment following a grant of £2.5m from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
