£1.88m of funding now available with Southwark Council’s Cleaner Greener Safer programme launch.
Published 4 November 2011
Residents and community groups are being urged to start thinking about their neighbourhood and how they want to improve it, as Southwark Council’s Cleaner Greener Safer Programme gets underway.
The window for applications to the council starts on October 29 2011 with a closing date of January 6 2012.
Examples of CGS projects that have been successfully carried out in Southwark over the last few years include
-
new play equipment and a community orchard in Warwick Gardens, SE15
-
pedestrian improvements at Rothsay Street, Borough, SE1
-
improvements at North Cross Road market, East Dulwich, SE22
-
a fantastic new sports hall at the Damilola Taylor Centre, Peckham SE15
-
new paths, tree lighting, a community orchard and meadow creation at Nursery Row Park, Walworth, SE17
-
a great new football pitch at Hawkstone estate, Rotherhithe, SE16
To mark the launch of this year's fund, Councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for transport, environment, and recycling at Southwark Council, attended a special event at the Battle and Caversham community garden, a successful and recently completed CGS project.
He said:
"Since 2003, over 1200 projects have been completed with a total spend of over £24.5m. The range of ideas brought to the council for funding is so varied, it shows that local people are continually thinking of ways to make their neighbourhoods better. This can be for something small such as more trees and planting to brighten up an area or something large such as a new play ground or sports facility.
I am looking forward to seeing this year's bids as I know the completed projects will help keep Southwark a great place to live and work in. I'm particularly interested in hearing from community groups that want to deliver the projects themselves as this year we will consider awarding grants to groups to carry out the work themselves. It's heartening to see the community get involved in improving the environment we all share."
