A project to reclaim local roads and revamp a public space into a greener, safer ‘community’, has won a prestigious National Transport Award.
The award was given to Southwark Council in partnership with the scheme's designers Mouchel, in the Excellence in Walking and Public Realm category. It follows four other accolades that the scheme has picked up in the last eight months, including the prestigious London Transport Award.
The Salisbury Row regeneration project, tucked between the New Kent Road and the Old Kent Road, included over 70 new trees, more than 3,600 plants and 7,500 bulbs, a new 'civic' zone for residents, some one-way working streets and a 20 mph speed limit throughout the whole scheme area.
Cllr Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling at Southwark Council, said:
"It really is testimony to this great scheme that it's notching up all these awards. Having visited it on several occasions I know just how impressive the Salisbury Row scheme is, and how working closely with the community resulted in such a strong finished product."
