Schools continue to improve in Southwark

Southwark has reached the top quartile for Maths for the first time this year. The council is also above average for other subjects, according to latest figures.
Primary school students have shown they are above the national and London average for English and Maths results at Key Stage Two. Key Stage Two is part of the national curriculum and taken by pupils at primary school.
Provisional figures from the Department for Education show that 89 percent of Southwark's pupils made the expected two levels of progress in English while 88 percent made the expected two levels of progress in Maths. For both subjects this is equivalent to a one percentage point increase from last year's results.
Compared to the rest of England Southwark is now ranked joint sixth and seventh for levels of progress in English and Maths.
This represents an increase of seven places from the previous year for two levels of progress in English, and an increase of four places for two levels of progress in Maths. Two levels of progress are very important for pupils not achieving expected levels at the end of Key Stage Two.
Southwark also performed better than 25 for two levels of progress in English and 26 other London local authorities for two levels of progress in Maths.
Catherine McDonald, cabinet member for children's services said: "I'm absolutely delighted to see that we continue to make significant advances in our key stage two results. They offer proof of our staff's hard work and dedication which helps pupils perform at their best.
"Maths and English are core subject areas and it's very encouraging to see this upward trend in the results. I'm confident that Southwark is more than capable of maintaining this level of performance and making further advances in the future."
