Independent travel training

The first step to independence is a big one for any young person but it is often much harder for those with physical disabilities and special educational needs.

We have teamed up with local schools and colleges to provide independent travel training to help support students in the borough with physical disabilities and special educational needs.This helps them live as independently as possible and take part in everyday activities.

The independent travel training programme has been devised in association with parents, Transport for London, the Met Police and Go Ahead London. It consists of three stages; bronze, silver and gold. Young people taking part can progress through the stages at their own pace, moving to the next level once they have been assessed competent.

Training is available to all schools across the borough. The aim for the future is to roll the sessions out to parents, voluntary groups and other interested parties or individuals.

Why is independent travel training important?

Training opens opportunities both for learning and job prospects

increases independence and use of own initiative
provides greater freedom to eventually become less reliant on friends and family
develops social skills
greater choice about what to do.
