New gym opens at Camberwell Leisure Centre

Local residents will now have access to the brand new 30 workstation gym which also includes new dry-changing rooms.

Councillor Veronica Ward, cabinet member for culture, leisure, sports and the Olympics, who opened the new gym said:

"Southwark is committed to making Camberwell Leisure Centre accessible to everyone in the borough and I'm absolutely delighted with the improvements to the venue so far.

"It has taken a lot of hard work and dedication to restore this grade 2 listed building and transform it into a venue where people can enjoy leisure activities and I would like to thank everyone involved in the project."

To celebrate the opening of the new gym, three lucky people were given free gym membership. Councillor Veronica Ward presented library worker, Susan Davies, Philip Nicol, 40, a charity worker from Denmark Hill and the Jenen family from Camberwell with their prizes at the opening.

Visitors Service Manager, Emma Davies, 24, and her mum Susan, 53 from Camberwell, were awarded first prize which was 12 months joint membership.

Susan said:

"We were both stunned when Emma received the news that she had won the competition, having never won anything before.

"We look forward to making full use of our membership attending as many activities as possible."

This part of the redevelopment of Camberwell is the latest phase in Southwark Council's refurbishment programme, which has so far seen the re - launch of Surrey Docks Centre in February 2010 and the completion of Dulwich Leisure Centre in June 2011.
