Call for public to help shape the Elephant and the Nun festival

Published 18 August 2011

The Elephant and the Nun, Southwark’s new community festival celebrating the heart of Southwark, is taking place on the weekend of 17 and 18 September.

Rescheduled from 14 August following the disturbances, The Elephant and the Nun will bring together community groups, individuals, businesses and schools in a festival that gives the area and its residents a chance to shine.

The events will cover Elephant and Castle, Walworth, Kennington, Camberwell, Peckham and Nunhead.

Help shape the event

We are still offering the opportunity for venues, businesses, community groups, places of worship and schools to join in, and it's not too late. If you have an event or activity that celebrates the community, challenges stereotypes and is creative and fun and you would like it to happen as part of The Elephant and the Nun let us know.

The deadline for getting your ideas to us is Tuesday, 23 August.

Cllr Ian Wingfield, deputy leader at Southwark Council, said:

"We are all looking forward to some wonderful events next month to celebrate what is best in the borough, and this is a great chance for the community to play a part in shaping this festival. So I'd urge everyone to come up with their ideas to make this festival something special and let us know."

Ideas could be:

  • A community group creates temporary street dressing for the festival
  • A business programmes live dance performances over the weekend
  • A school works with an artist to create a piece of art celebrating the area
  • A poet involves shoppers to create a Poem for Southwark by chalking on pavements
  • A cycling group leads a historical cycle ride around the area
  • A band or music group gets together with a pub to stage a battle of the bands
  • A group of artists work with local businesses to create new shop window displays
  • A local faith group creates a choir from scratch with shoppers in a shopping centre

On Sunday 18 September, four simultaneous festivals will take place on Camberwell Green, Lucas Gardens , Brunswick Park and Peckham Square .  These areas and linking routes have been programmed by community partners and will include sports and cultural activities and live performances for all ages.

Whatever your ideas, we are looking for projects that are visible and engage the communities of SE17, SE15 and SE5.
