Southwark pupils achieve record SAT results

Primary school pupils in Southwark have achieved record highs in their English and maths exams - dramatically boosting their Key Stage 2 SATs results this year, education chiefs have revealed.
Overall the results mean that Southwark is now in the top quarter of the country in maths and in the top half for all other test subjects.
Provisional scores for the national tests show Southwark's results for English and maths were the 13th highest in London - a big jump from fourth from bottom last year.
Figures show that 83 percent of Southwark pupils achieved Level 4 and above in English, an increase of 4 percent on last year's results. For maths 82 percent of pupils achieved Level 4 - a 2 percent increase on last year.
For English and maths combined 76 percent achieved Level 4 - compared to 73 percent last year. Nationally this means the authority is now ranked 48th for combined English and maths compared with 128th just three years ago.
Reading and writing also showed considerable improvements in 2011.
Overall the results mean that Southwark is now in the first quartile in maths improving from the second quartile, and in the second quartile for all other test subjects improving from the third quartile.
Catherine McDonald, cabinet member for children's services at Southwark Council said: "This is a fantastic set of results, showing that the standards in Southwark continue to improve and are now among the best in the country'. Students should feel proud of what they have achieved in this year's SATs.
"This represents a big improvement on last year's results and is a testament to the drive, dedication and hard work Southwark's pupils put in all year round.
"Warm congratulations must also go to their teachers and parents for the opportunities, support and guidance they provide for our young people."
