Borough arts organisation gets council’s highest green honour

Jerwood Space in Bankside has been awarded a Gold Environmental Business Award by Southwark Council.
The business, which describes itself as "one of the best rehearsal spaces for theatre and dance in the country" impressed the council with its commitment to recycling, staff training, and its approach to environmental reporting.
Cllr Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling at Southwark Council, said:
"It's so important that we encourage businesses to be as environmentally aware as possible. Our awards scheme recognises efforts made by Southwark businesses, and also enables them to build on the progress they've made thanks to our advice, support and free audits."
Peter Wilkinson, Deputy Director at Jerwood Space, added:
"Jerwood Space is pleased to play its part towards environmental sustainability and is proud to accept this award from Southwark."

Jerwood Space carried out a number of initiatives to achieve their gold award, including:

Complying with relevant waste legalisation

Having an environmental policy in place for staff

Recycling paper, card and plastics

Providing training for staff in environmental practice by having environmental posters on display, switching all electrical appliances off at the end of the day and having controllable thermostats in individual areas

Purchasing paper from 100% recycling sources.

Reporting for their business over an 18 month period around waste, recycling, energy, water and procurement.
