Carers' Week (14 to 18 June)
Published 11 June 2010
The council directly supports carers and funds a range of carer services in the community.
There are over 20,000 carers in Southwark who everyday make an incredible difference to the lives of others. Carers' Week is a chance to remind everyone that help is out there.
The theme of this year's Carers' Week is A life of my own. It concentrates on the many parts of life that most of us take for granted such as family occasions, going on holiday, a meal out, or even relaxing for an evening without worries or responsibilities.
Carers' Week also raises awareness of what carers might need to have a life of their own, including:
- Access to relevant and practical information to help them with their caring role.
- The opportunity to take a break.
- Support at times of crisis.
- Financial support.
If a carer provides a substantial amount of care on a regular basis they are entitled to have an assessment of their needs. Carers can ask for their own assessment at any time, even if the person they care for does not want an assessment or services.
The council also backs Southwark Carers, which is putting on a range of events for Carers' Week. To find out more, visit: www.southwarkcarers.org.uk/
