Thousands to take part in London's newest festival – the Elephant and the Nun
Published 3 August 2011
Thousands of revellers are set to take part in London's newest festival in venues as diverse as a supermarket, a multi-storey care park and the Ministry of Sound nightclub.
Organised by Southwark Council, the Elephant and Nun Festival will bring alive the areas from Elephant and Castle to Nunhead, with a feast of creative indoor events and outdoor activities.
The ten day event is part of Southwark Council's new festival line up of three distinct festivals each year, which celebrate the north, the centre and the south of the borough separately.
The new structure was created, and each festival put together, after consultation and input from all our festival partners, and the council believes residents will this year enjoy an exciting and vibrant set of festivals across the borough.
Starting on August 5th, the ten day long Elephant and the Nun festival will see a vast array of classes, workshops, walks, films, dances and open studios on offer to residents and visitors.
Highlights include:
-
A dance, film and live performance on Peckham's multi-storey car-park roof.
-
"Flash" tango dance event in Tesco
-
DJ training, with 5 winners playing at the Ministry of Sound
The festival closes with a huge outdoor grand finale across four open spaces on Sunday 14 August - Camberwell Green, Lucas Gardens, Brunswick Park and Peckham Space.
Between these areas there will also be a programme of street performers, walks, cycle rides and activities linking the four sites together.
Cllr Veronica Ward, cabinet member for culture, libraries, leisure and the Olympics at Southwark Council, said:
"This line-up is a truly wonderful celebration of all that is great about the people and places at the heart of the borough, and despite the significant budget constraints we've had to overcome, I believe that this new festival promises to be a wonderful way of enjoying all that the borough has to offer. I'd urge everyone to join in the fun."
The council would like to thank its sponsors The Ministry of Sound, Asda and Southwark Council's Youth Service, who are all specifically supporting projects that celebrate the contribution of young people.
