Event marks new chapter for community venture

Published 2 August 2011

Elim community centre

Elim House Community Venture (formerly the Black Elderly Group Southwark) hosted a barbeque to celebrate its 30th anniversary in Peckham last Friday.

The event heralded the advent of the organisation re-launching and opening its doors to provide support to the wider community.

Councillor Dora Dixon - Fyle, cabinet member for health and social care at Southwark Council, was one of the guests who attended the event and said: "Over the years, this organisation has done a great job of attending to the health and social needs of people and I hope that it will continue to thrive and achieve even more in the future.

"Southwark Council is changing the way that is provides health and social care services to local people and the Elim House Community Venture is playing its part in the process."

The Black Elderly Group Southwark (BEGS) has been providing support to African and Caribbean people over the age of 65 with support needs for the last 30 years.

Councillor Lorraine Lauder, Mayor of Southwark, who was also at the event said: "I'm absolutely delighted to see how this organisation has grown and I look forward to watching its progress in the future."

Elim House Community Venture has developed a comprehensive charging policy for people to access their services.

Those who are eligible for support will receive a personal budget from the council to pay for the services that help them to remain independent. Others will be asked to pay for the services themselves.

Background inforamtion

Southwark Council will stop block funding Elim House from the end of August.

The council will fund people through personal budgets to support their needs. They can then choose to purchase the services of Elim House, giving them more choice and control.

The Elim House Community Venture provides three levels of support (high, medium and low) and each is determined by the level of input required by the centre to support their service users.

Activities and events at Elim are determined mostly by the service users and include:

  • Craft sewing classes
  • Arts and crafts
  • Seated keep fit
  • Dance classes
  • A befriending service
