Residents of Southwark are being invited down to Camberwell Green to celebrate a special date in the calendar.
Saturday 23 July marks the year to go to the start of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and as a host borough Southwark Council, in partnership with Camberwell Community Council and SE5 Forum, is putting on a celebration.
As well as athletics demonstrations and activities on the council's portable track, and aerobics and dance sessions, there will be an array of other activities, including:
-
Southwark Community Games with a full day of sports activity
-
Give it a Go Village, where local clubs will demonstrate their sports
-
Butterfly Ballroom, showcasing dance and music
-
Libraries summer reading challenge, this year all about circuses
-
The Big Swim at the Camberwell Leisure Centre pool, round the corner
-
The Amazing Southwark Gymnasts and their daring displays
-
Groundwork Southwark Spots vs Stripes. Whose team will you be on?
On top of the activities on the day, Southwark's Olympic and Paralympic flag will be raised to mark the special day.
Cllr Veronica Ward, cabinet member for culture, leisure, sport and the Olympics at Southwark Council, added:
"The Olympics and Paralympics are already creating such huge interest, and the year to go milestone should be a fantastic way of building on that enthusiasm. I'd love to see as many local people make the most of the events and displays that will be happening on the day, and I'm sure it will be a huge success."
