Planning approval at Bredinghurst
Published 12 July 2011
Planning permission has been granted for new state of the art teaching accommodation for Bredinghurst School in Peckham.
Bredinghurst School is a Special Education Needs (SEN) school for pupils with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. The school currently has 32 staff and 50 students aged between 11 to 16 years.
The new two storey school building will provide fit for purpose accommodation for the school. The proposals include retaining the existing Victorian residential buildings.
The school will remain a single sex SEN school for boys between 11 and 16 years of age but the number of pupils is proposed to increase to 70 and the number of staff to 45.
The academic establishment has a strong commitment to helping its students prepare for local and global challenges and feels that the new school building will help add to a high quality education for the pupils.
Catherine McDonald, cabinet member for children's services at Southwark Council, said:
"It's great that Bredinghurst School is getting new and transformed buildings, which will benefit pupils now and in years to come - and help the school continue to perform at a high level."
Background Information
The site for Bredinghurst School currently consists of converted residential dwellings with an open playing field to the west. The existing buildings are formed of a group of semi - detached and detached 2 storey buildings originally built for residential occupation.
The new building and improved landscaping is to be built on the open part of the site, with the former residential school buildings being retained.
The school ethos is to provide a skill based curriculum within a therapeutic environment and the use of landscaped garden areas for teaching have been incorporated into the proposed design.
