Beko and LEC fridges recalled due to fire safety warning
Published 5 July 2011
London Fire Brigade and Trading Standards have advised about the product recall of some models of Beko and LEC Fridge Freezers.
We understand that a Beko or LEC fridge freezer could have been the source of the recent fire at Lupin Point in Southwark. Therefore, if you have a Beko or LEC fridge freezer, it is very important that you take the time to check the serial number against the list of serial numbers of the fridge freezers affected in the list below.
The council is writing to every resident in the borough to inform them that if their fridge freezer is one of the models affected, they must get in touch with Beko or LEC directly. Beko will then arrange for a minor adaptation to be made to the motor in their fridge freezer in order to ensure its safety. As residents are responsible for the maintenance of domestic electrical appliances, the matter is for Beko to resolve directly.
Councillor Ian Wingfield, cabinet member for housing, said: "Southwark Council takes fire safety extremely seriously. Alongside completed Fire Risk Assessments of every high rise block in the borough, and £19m of fire safety work which is assigned to council homes in Southwark, residents are given free advice regarding home fire safety.
"I would like to reassure residents that the risk of fire from these specific Beko fridge freezers will be greatly reduced once all residents have been informed, and I would urge anyone with this make and model to get in touch with Beko immediately on 0800 009 4837. Further details for Beko and LEC are listed below. "
