Tea and cakes to celebrate transformed Boundary Row

Published 10 March 2010

Residents of Chaplin Close and Southwark councillors held a tea party with a difference to celebrate the recent improvements on Boundary Row and Ufford Street on Thursday (3 March).

Boundary Row and Ufford Street have been completely transformed thanks to £124,000 from Section 106 and Cleaner Greener Safer funding from Southwark Council, resulting in a much more attractive and accessible road.

Residents of Chaplin Close were thrilled with the improvements. Ann Parnell from Chaplin Close said:

"We are delighted with the new improvements that have taken place to Boundary Row. The street looks wonderful and is now so much easier use. It has made a huge difference."

Cllr Paul Kyriacou, executive member for environment, said: "Boundary Row used to suffer from an extremely narrow footway, cracked unattractive paving, badly designed drop curbs and a restricted access because of the street furniture.

"The footway is now safe for wheelchairs, anyone with mobility issues and people with pushchairs and buggies, and is a great example of residents using opportunities like the council's Cleaner Greener Safer funding to make positive changes to where they live.

Cllr Morris said: "This is such an improvement on the way the area used to look, and will encourage people to stop and chat, rather than hurrying on through to somewhere more welcoming; and is a great example of local residents and businesses working together with their council."

The improvements include:

  • widening the footway on Boundary Row and relocating street furniture to the back of the kerb to make the pavement more accessible to wheelchair users and parents using push-chairs.
  • relaying the footway on both Boundary Row and Ufford Street with high quality attractive paving stones.
  • relaying the crossovers with improved materials on both streets.
  • resurfacing the highway to create a more smoother and uniform appearance.
  • installing bollards on the northern side of the footway to prevent illegal parking.
