Football fever
Published 2 June 2010
As the world's biggest football competition gets underway, homes up and down the borough prepare to be hit by football fever.
But if you feel inspired by the drama of this global occasion, why not experience it for yourself?Southwark's wealth of amateur teams are proof that anyone and everyone can have a go at the nation's favourite sport.
Football is great exercise as it burns calories, improves your stamina and strengthens your muscles. It's a good stress buster and can improve your mood and help you sleep. And unlike pounding the treadmill, the excitement of playing for your team means your exercise session will fly by.
Southwark is home to Millwall, but there are also amateur football clubs based here, whose members have their origins in more countries than the world cup teams themselves.
Players ages range from tots to 60+ and there are teams for men, women, girls and boys at all levels of ability.
