Southwark hosts its own sports challenge
Published 19 July 2010
Two years to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, aspiring sports stars are being urged to head to Surrey Quays Shopping Centre on Saturday 24 July for Southwark's sports challenge.
The council has teamed up with Surrey Quays Shopping Centre to put on a day of sports and fun for all the family, as the countdown to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games hits the two years to go mark.
Based around a series of sporting feats, there will be a chance to sprint, row, cycle, as well as try out football, gymnastics or rugby.
Southwark Council's sports team will be bringing its 60 metre portable athletics track, which will be placed outside the main entrance doors of the Shopping Centre nearest to BHS, plus there will be gymnastics displays, Millwall Football Club, Stilt walkers, jugglers and much more.
There will also be lots of prizes in the form of medals and sports vouchers, as well as promotions and offers in the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre for one day only.
Councillor Veronica Ward, cabinet member for sports, culture, leisure and Olympics, said "As we hit the two years to go date, I think Londoners and Southwark residents will begin to feel the buzz of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. So events like this are a great way to tap into that excitement, and to remind residents about the opportunities to get involved in sport that exist around the borough."
Ian Moore from Surrey Quays Shopping Centre added: "The shopping centre is delighted to be working partnership with Southwark Council and hosting this exciting sport challenge event which will be a great family day out."
