Safe crossing for Nell Gwynn Nursery School children

Parents, teachers and schoolchildren at Nell Gwynn Nursery School celebrated last Friday (9 July) the opening of a new zebra crossing which they campaigned for.
Southwark Council cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling councillor Barrie Hargrove, joined children and parents to officially mark the completion of the £50,000 project funded by Peckham Community Council through Southwark Council's Cleaner Greener Safer programme.
Councillor Barrie Hargrove said: "This vital crossing will provide a safer route for local residents and will increase the number of families walking and cycling to Gwynn Nursery School.
"I am delighted that the school is also taking part in the council's scheme to loan out bikes to the borough's teaching staff to help them go green."
Barbara Stevens, Chair of Governors and School Crossing Patrol Officer, who applied for the grant, said: "With no official crossing and uncontrolled parking around the school gate, crossing the road was dangerous. It was difficult to encourage families to take the healthy option and walk to school, which was a key part of the school's travel plan.
"It is fantastic news that we have this crossing and I would like to say thank you to all those who worked hard with me to make this project a reality."
Nell Gwynn Nursery School was awarded Southwark's Green Oscar for the Best Walking School in 2008/2009 and achieved Sustainable School Level from Transport for London in 2009.
