Residents go for gold with the spring clearout recycling giveaway
Published 15 March 2010
Southwark residents could pocket £1000, just by recycling.
The spring clearout recycling giveaway is being run by Southwark Council, in partnership with Veolia Environmental Services which has donated the prize.
All residents have to do to be entered into the prize draw is make a pledge, on the council's website or in writing, to recycle everything they can whilst having their spring clearout.
Residents who would like to enter should keep their eyes peeled for a leaflet coming through their door soon. Alternatively, they can go online or call 020 7525 2000 to make their pledge.
To get people started, Veolia have provided 5 top tips, but they are also encouraging residents to share their own recycling tips.
1. If bathroom lotions and potions are out of date, recycle the bottles as part of your clearout.
2. Recycle old paperwork, magazines, catalogues and directories. Clear out unused cardboard boxes too.
3. Recycle out of date jars and tins from your fridge or kitchen cupboards.
4. Contact the council on 020 7525 2000 to arrange free collection of larger items and furniture.
5. Request more clear bags or an extra blue box and bag to manage your clear out by contacting the council.
Jennianne Harrington (aged four), who was informally crowned Southwark's Miss Recycling at the Peckham Rye Summer Fair in 2009, and mum Karen Harrington, were delighted to hear about the draw.
Karen said: "When we have a clearout we always recycle everything we can and we take things to charity shops too. Jennianne likes to take her old comics to Kings College Hospital Children's Ward so the sick boys and girls have something to read."
Councillor Paul Kyriacou, executive member for environment at Southwark Council added: "We're delighted that Veolia have put up these prizes and I hope that the competition will get people thinking about recycling too."
Simon Bussell, managing director for Veolia Environmental Services in Southwark said: "Having a clearout is a great spring tradition that offers its own rewards. Our recycling crews are ready and waiting to take extra recycling that people might produce and we hope that by giving residents the chance to win a £1000, we're able to add an extra element of fun to the proceedings."
