Potters Fields deal gets the green light

On 26 July Southwark Council’s cabinet approved a landmark agreement between the authority and Berkeley Homes on the future development of Potters Fields, a high profile site in London’s South Bank.
The site sits next to Tower Bridge on the south bank of the Thames opposite the Tower of London and is set to become one of the most prestigious developments in the capital.
The cabinet approval is the culmination of the collaboration between Southwark Council and Berkeley Homes over the last few years to realise their vision for the joint development of the site.
Following wide ranging consultation, including a public exhibition, the Michael Squires planning application for the development was submitted in July 2010. The application is for a mixed use scheme including a cultural area and much needed housing for London.
Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Fiona Colley, cabinet member for regeneration, said: "Potters Fields is a key development opportunity at a world class location. I am very pleased that we have been able to agree to enter into the development agreement with Berkeley Homes in accordance with the wishes of both the previous and present administrations.
"This will bring forward this site to provide new homes, commercial and retail opportunities and cultural accommodation."
Tony Pidgley, Chairman of Berkeley, said: "I am absolutely delighted that by working closely with Southwark Council, we are now able to progress the development of this world class site to provide an exciting scheme that will deliver much needed housing in London."
